Reports
Comments and questions: Summary@Summary.Net

All of the reports are user configurable. Each report is set up to provide information about a specific category of information, but the set of columns, sort order and filtering can be configured. That means that what you observe may not be exactly what is described here but it will still be reporting on the same underlying information.

Time

Hourly Report - Displays information for each hour about hits, data transferred, visits, and unique hosts. The number of hours for which information is available is controlled by the "Number of hours to keep hourly statistics on" configuration setting.

Daily Report - Displays information for each day about hits, data transferred, visits, and unique hosts. The number of days for which information is available is controlled by the "Number of days to keep daily statistics on" configuration setting.

Weekly Report - Displays information for each week about hits, data transferred, visits, and unique hosts. Weeks are defined as starting on Sunday at 12 AM.

Monthly Report - Displays information for each calendar month about hits, data transferred, visits, and unique hosts.

Yearly Report - Displays information for each calendar year about hits, data transferred, visits, and unique hosts.

Time of Day - Displays information for each hour of the day totaled across all days in the report about hits, data transferred, visits, and unique hosts.

Day of the Week - Displays information for each day of the week totaled across all weeks in the report about hits, data transferred, visits, and unique hosts.

Month of the Year - Displays information for each month of the year totaled across all years in the report about hits, data transferred, visits, and unique hosts.

Visitors

Top Level Domains - Displays information for each top level domain about hits and data transferred. By clicking on the domain name in the Top Level Domain column you can display a list of all the hosts accessing your site that are in that domain. The top level domain is the last component of a domain name. For example in the domain name "summary.net" the top level domain is "net".

Domain name information will only be available if either your web server or Summary is set to do DNS lookups. Otherwise you will only get numeric IP addresses. Even when DNS lookups are on, not all IP addresses can be converted to domain names. The addresses which can not be converted are referred to as unresolved addresses.

Most top level domains correspond to the country the owner of the domain name is located in, for example "jp" is used for Japan. There are also several top level domains that reflect the role of the owner, for example "com" is used for commercial organizations, although this has become one of the most overused of the top level domains and is often used for other purposes.

Domain Report - Displays information for each second, or in some cases third, level domain about hits and data transferred. The domains listed generally correspond to internet service providers, companies and organizations. The second level domain consists of the last two components of the domain name. For example in the domain name "1cust107.tnt1.krk1.da.uu.net" the second level domain would be "uu.net. In some cases the third level domain name will be used. This is primarily for countries that reserve second level domains for roles such as "co.uk" which specifies commercial in the United Kingdom. Another place third level domains will be used is "aol.com" which covers such a large portion of network users that the third level names are used. Domain name information must be present, see Top Level Domains for a discussion of DNS lookups. By clicking on the domain name in the Domain column you can display a list of all the hosts accessing your site that are in that domain.

Browser Report - Displays information for each browser about hits, current hits, data transferred, current data transferred, and visits. Browsers are determined from the agent string, which must be present in the log file for this report to work. Browsers generally correspond to the software package run by users to view your web site, for example Netscape Navigator, and are shown with their major version number. Some browsers are actually network robots that do not directly display the result to a user, such as "Scooter" which is one of the search engine indexing robots used by Digital's AltaVista search engine.

Platform Report - Displays information for each platform about hits, current hits, data transferred, current data transferred, and visits. Platforms are determined from the agent string, which must be present in the log file for this report to work. Platforms generally correspond to the combination of hardware and operating system used by users to run the browser to view your site.

Web Robots - Displays information for each known web robot accessing your site about hits, current hits, data transferred, current data transferred, and visits. Web robots are used for several purposes, such as search engine indexing robots, link checkers, e-mail address extractors, and update watchers. Web robots are determined from the agent string, which must be present in the log file for this report to work. Only web robots listed in Summary's internal database are reported.

Host Report - Displays information for each host accessing your site about hits, data transferred, and visits. The domain name is displayed if known, otherwise the numeric IP address is shown.

Visits per Host - Displays a histogram of the number of hosts making each range of number of visits. The Range column shows the range of the number of visits and the Count column shows the number of hosts with a visit count in that range.

Connection Speed - Displays a histogram of the number of hosts in each range of connection (modem) speed. The Range column shows the range of the number of bits per second and the Count column shows the number of hosts with a connection speed in that range. This report requires that the connection time be in the log. The results are fairly approximate, traffic on the servers internet connection, network buffering, overall internet traffic levels, and timing accuracy can all affect the results.

Content

Pages - Displays information for each page about hits, current hits, data transferred, current data transferred, date of the first recorded hit, and potential several other fields. Which requests are considered pages is determined by the "Page file name extensions" configuration setting.

Downloads - Displays information for each download about hits, current hits, data transferred, current data transferred, date of the first recorded hit, and potential several other fields. Which requests are considered downloads is determined by the "Download file name extensions" configuration setting.

Graphics - Displays information for each graphic about hits, current hits, data transferred, current data transferred, date of the first recorded hit, and potential several other fields. Which requests are considered graphics is determined by the "Graphic file name extensions" configuration setting.

Others - Displays information for each request not in the page, download, or graphics reports about hits, current hits, data transferred, current data transferred, date of the first recorded hit, and potential several other fields. Any request which is not selected by the "Page file name extensions", "Download file name extensions", or "Graphic file name extensions" configuration settings are considered others.

All Requests - Displays information for all requests about hits, current hits, data transferred, current data transferred, date of the first recorded hit, and potential several other fields.

Directory Report - Displays information for each top level directory about hits, current hits, data transferred, current data transferred, date of the first recorded hit, and potential several other fields. The top level directories are taken from the first component of the full request path. For example the directory for "/pages/home/index.html" would be "/pages".

File Type Report - Displays information for each file name extension about hits and data transferred. The file name extension is taken from the last component of the full request path. For example the extension for "/pages/home/index.html" would be "html".

New Requests - Displays information for requests that have a recent first observed request date about hits, current hits, data transferred, current data transferred, date of the first recorded hit, and potential several other fields.

Tech. Details

Agent Report - Displays information for each agent about hits and data transferred. The agent string must be present in the log file for this report to work. Agent strings are supplied by the web browser or robot to indicate which program is acting as an agent for the user for this request. There is often additional information possibly including version number, operating system and/or hardware platform, language, international vs. USA encryption support, etc.

Many browsers pretend to be other browsers, for example Microsoft Internet Explorer will normally indicate that it is Netscape Navigator and then provide additional indications in a different place that it is not, as in this example "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows 95)". The leading "Mozilla" is nominally an indication that this is Netscape Navigator. The "compatible; MSIE 4.01;" indicates that it is in fact Microsoft Internet Explorer. "Windows 95" indicates the operating system it is running under. Not all browsers and robots are so helpful, a few provide completely false information.

Method Report - Displays information for each HTTP method about hits and data transferred. The method must be present in the log file for this report to work. The "GET" method is the most common, indicating a normal request for a file. The "HEAD" method indicates a request for just the header information, such as file modified date and file size.

Result Codes - Displays information for each HTTP response code about hits and data transferred. The result code must be present in the log file for this report to work. The result code 200 indicates a normally completed transfer. The result codes 301 and 302 indicate a "redirect" response, pointing the browsers to a different URL. The 401 result code indicates that the client is not authorized to view this data. The 404 result code indicates that the requested entity was not found.

Auth User Report - Displays information for each authorized user name about hits and data transferred. The authentication user name must be in the log file for this report to work. Most web transactions are not authenticated and will not have a user name. When some portion of your web server is restricted, requiring a name and password, the name supplied but the user will appear in this report.

Cookie Report - Displays information for each cookie received along with the request about hits and data transferred. Cookie data must be in you log file and the "Create cookie report" configuration option must be checked for this report to work. Cookies are returned along with the request when you have previously indicated to the web browser that they should be. Most sites do not use cookies and many browsers have been set not to return them even if requested to do so. Sites that supply unique cookies along with every request will result in this report taking a large amount of memory and might not provide much useful information.

Virtual Servers - Displays information for each virtual server about total hits and data transferred. Virtual server names must be in your log file for this report to work. The virtual server name is normally the domain name of the server as requested by the user. This might be a domain name or a numeric IP address or a combination of the two depending on how your server operates.

CGI Arguments - Displays information for each CGI argument about hits and data transferred. CGI arguments must be in your log file and the "Create CGI/Search argument report" configuration option must be checked for this report to work. The portion of the request after a '?' is considered a series of arguments to a CGI program. This list is split on '&' characters and each item is listed separately. They will typically consist of field names and values separated by a '=' character. Sites that use unique arguments to CGI's on every request will result in this report taking a large amount of memory and might not provide much useful information.

Local Referrers - Displays information for each local referrer about hits and data transferred. Referrer information must be in your log file for this report to work. Referrers are split into local and remote based on the "Preferred domain name" and "Other local domain names" configuration settings. Local referrers normally include pages referring to their contained graphics and internal links to other pages or downloads.

Referrers

Domains - Displays information for each referring domain about hits, current hits, data transferred, current data transferred, and visits. Referrer information must be in the log file for this report to work. Domains are the second or third level portion of the referring domain. See the discussion under the Domain report for more information on how they are derived. Clicking on a domain name in the Referring Domain column will give a report of all the specific referrers in this domain.

Referrers - Displays information for each referrer about hits, current hits, data transferred, current data transferred, and date of first observed reference. Referrer information must be in the log file for this report to work. CGI argument information will not be displayed but if it is present, the most common CGI argument observed with the referrer will be appended when you follow the link.

Search Words - Displays information for each search word about number of occurrences, labeled as hits in the report. Referrer information must be in the log file for this report to work. Summary uses built in knowledge of major search engines to extract search strings used by users that resulted in them visiting your site. This report indicates the number of usages of each individual word, parsed out of the original search string, observed. This list will not be completely comprehensive, as not every search engine provides this information, but it should be representative.

Search Phrases - Displays information for each search phrase about number of occurrences, labeled as hits in the report. Referrer information must be in the log file for this report to work. Summary uses built in knowledge of major search engines to extract search strings used by users that resulted in them visiting your site. This report indicates the number of usages of each search string observed. This list will not be completely comprehensive, as not every search engine provides this information, but it should be representative.

Full Referrers - Displays information for each referrer and it's associated CGI arguments about number of occurrences, labeled as hits in the report . Referrer information must be in the log file for this report to work. Up to 12 CGI arguments will be displayed. An attempt is made to provide the 12 most commonly used argument strings. The results are not exact when there are more than 12 arguments, but should be representative.

New Referrers - Displays information for the most recently first observed referrers about hits, current hits, data transferred, current data transferred, and date of first observed reference. Referrer information must be in the log file for this report to work. CGI argument information will not be displayed but if it is present, the most common CGI argument observed with the referrer will be appended when you follow the link.

Visits

Entry Point
Exit Point
Steps
Avg View Time
Tot View Time
- All four of these reports display information for non-graphics requests about the number of times visits started with that request (Enters), the number of times visits ended with that request (Exits), the number of times the only non-graphic hit in a visit was that request (1 Page Visits), the average time (across all visits) between requesting that page and requesting the next page (in the visit) (View Time), the total time between requesting that page and requesting the next page (for visits that requested a page after that one) summed over all visits (Total View Time), the average index to this page in a sequence of requests from the start of a visit to the end of the visit (where 1 is the first request, 2 is the second request and so on, and graphics are never counted) (Avg. Steps) and hits and data transferred information.

Bandwidth

Requests by Bytes - Displays information for all requests about hits, current hits, data transferred, and current data transferred.

Peak Hours - Displays information for each hour about hits, data transferred, visits, and unique hosts. The number of hours for which information is available is controlled by the "Number of hours to keep hourly statistics on" configuration setting.

Peak Days - Displays information for each day about hits, data transferred, visits, and unique hosts. The number of days for which information is available is controlled by the "Number of days to keep daily statistics on" configuration setting.

by File Type - Displays information for each file name extension about hits and data transferred. The file name extension is taken from the last component of the full request path. For example the extension for "/pages/home/index.html" would be "html".

Transfer Size - Displays a histogram of the number of hits in each range of bytes transferred in a single request. The Range column shows the range of the number of bytes transferred and the Count column shows the number of hits with a bytes transferred in that range.

Transfer Time - Displays a histogram of the number of hits in each range of time to transfer a single request in tenths of a second. The Range column shows the range of the number tenths of a second to complete the transfer and the Count column shows the number of hits with a time in that range. This report requires that the connection time be in the log.

Problems

Bad Links - Displays, for each request that failed, the referrers that referred the user to the failing location. Referrer information must be in your log file for this report to work. Up to 12 failing referrers will be displayed. An attempt is made to provide the 12 most commonly used failing referrers. The results are not exact when there are more than 12, but should be representative.

Failed Requests - Displays information for each failed request about the number of occurrences (Errors) and the number of current occurrences (Cur Errors).

Gaps in Service - Displays the starting date and time (Date) and duration of each period when the server received no requests and an analysis of the "normal" rate of requests indicates that it should have been receiving requests. The more total hits your server receives, the more accurate the information displayed will be.

Least Requested - Displays information about the requests receiving the smallest number of hits including hits, current hits and date of first occurrence.

Reloads - Displays information for each request about the number of times it was requested and then requested again by the same host without any requests from that host for a non-graphic in between (Reloads), hits, and data transferred. These "duplicate" requests can be caused by the user manually re-loading the page or download, or by various properties of the caching system between the user and your web site. In general, high percentages of re-loads indicate difficulty in completing the transfer. Keep in mind that some number of reloads are to be expected even if no transfer failures occur.

Visit Details

Duration - Displays a histogram of the number of visits lasting each range of visit durations. The Range column shows the range of the visit duration in seconds and the Count column shows the number of visits in that range.

Pages per Visit - Displays a histogram of the number of visits containing each range of pages requested during the visit. The Range column shows the range of the number of pages requested and the Count column shows the number of visits in that range.

Hits per Visit - Displays a histogram of the number of visits containing each range of requests during the visit. The Range column shows the range of the number of requests and the Count column shows the number of visits in that range.

Bytes per Visit - Displays a histogram of the number of visits containing each range of bytes transferred during the visit. The Range column shows the range of the number of bytes transferred and the Count column shows the number of visits in that range.

Paths

Sources - Displays information for each page request about which local pages referred users to this one. Referrer information must be in your log file for this report to work. Up to 12 sources will be displayed. An attempt is made to provide the 12 most commonly used sources. The results are not exact when there are more than 12, but should be representative.

Destinations - Displays information for each page request about which local pages users went to after this one. Referrer information must be in your log file for this report to work. Up to 12 destinations will be displayed. An attempt is made to provide the 12 most commonly used destinations. The results are not exact when there are more than 12, but should be representative.

Paths - Displays information for each path taken during a visit through the site about the path followed and the number of visits that took that path (Hits). Paths with more than fours steps are combined into groups where the first three steps and the last step match. Any sequence of intermediate steps are ignored, and are displayed as ". . .".

User

Although all reports are user configurable, extra report slots are provided here to allow you to have more different reports in the major categories than there are reports already provided.

Requests One
Requests Two
Requests Three
- These three reports all report on requests. The set of columns appearing, sort order, and filtering are configurable.

Referrers One - This report reports on referrers. The set of columns appearing, sort order, and filtering are configurable.

General

Summary - Displays overview information about most available kinds of information.

Logs - Displays information about the number of log files, the total number of lines in the log files, the number of lines that could not be parsed, the number of lines containing header information that were not counted as requests, the number of requests, the number of requests that were filtered out, the time to process the log files, the rate at which log entries are processed, the amount of memory available on the machine during log processing, the amount of memory used for log processing, and similar information about each individual log file, including the first and last observed dates in the log file. Clicking on a non-zero number in the Parse Errors column will take you to a report of the first 100 log entries that could not be parsed.

Configure - Takes you to the configuration pages. See the manual section on configuration.
